Review - Ruislip Lido

You read that correctly, a genuine bonafide beach exists here in the capital. It's not one of those lame pop up things by the Thames. This shore line is the real deal.

Up in the North West, you'll find Ruislip Lido. The location comes complete with a stretch of sand and a body of water. The latter being a beautiful lake that is worth seeing whatever the weather.

The inland coast is a permanent fixture, meaning you can visit throughout the year. But lets face it, you want to visit on a hot day. With heatwaves being an annual occurrence, what better place to cool down? In among the play area are water activities to help lower your temperature.

Chances are you'll be looking for some extra shade on a scorching day. A pleasant spot can be found beneath the palm trees... Not bad for an extra exotic touch eh!?

If you're thinking of going for a swim, then you may want to look elsewhere. Entering the lake is forbidden.

When I visited, it was obvious to me that the lido is a great place to take the kids. It contains a pirate themed park for swashbuckling adventures and even a mini railway. The latter gives an authentic seaside feel! The nearby Woodland Centre also offers environmental education opportunities. The venue also has a cafe for you to stock up and quench your thirst.

But is it really a beach?

Yes. A shore doesn't necessarily need sea. Many Americans, Germans and Swedes enjoy holidays at lakeside sandy areas. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us Brits too.

Is it worth visiting?

You've probably seen other so called beaches around town. You know the type. Sand dumped in a beer garden, bars from bamboo sticks etc, deckchairs strewn about the riverside. While these are enticing, nothing beats the real McCoy.

Sure you can take a train to the sea, but you can find some r&r in the Big Smoke too. And the best part, you can get there via tube! The summer is long and hot. So give it a try. If you ask me, Ruislip Lido is a worthy choice for a summertime activity.

Fun fact - A replica of the Titanic was filmed sinking in the pond for the movie A Night to Remember!
