Review - Dancing Tao, Sweaty Thursdays

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life for something more tranquil and spiritual. Each Thursday, St Peter's Church in Vauxhall hosts an evening of dance, detox and connection with fellow souls. This is a great place to let loose and shrug off the everyday stresses of London living.

The church's pews are removed to make way for a large arena for boogieing. The playlist is specifically selected to take you on a celestial journey. The night starts with slow, serene melodies and later graduates into harder, upbeat vibes. Before you know it, you'll find yourself jigging and jiving forcefully, raving to the heaviest electro this side of the Thames!

What is 5 Rhythms?

It is movement based on dance events which are gathering traction around the world. The style draws from shamanic teachings and eastern mystical philosophies.

The practice intends to take your soul on a journey throughout five sequences - (1) Flowing, (2) Staccato, (3) Chaos, (4) Lyrical and (5) Stillness. These cycles feature music with varying tempos, allowing you to make shapes and feel each rhythm accordingly.

In a nutshell, think if the dance as a meditation in motion.

The aim is to let your body to be free and express yourself in whichever way you please. The event provides a natural high by getting the heart pumping through what is essentially, an aerobic workout.

Is it worth visiting?

Despite the feeling of being in a rave, alcohol is strictly forbidden. This isn't the place you'd want to come to for a "heavy night with the lads". The best way I can describe it is - To the untrained eye, it may look like a bunch of hippies being weird. The events selling point is less on “rave” but more on “spiritualism”.

5 Rhythms attracts people from all backgrounds who want to leave the woes of urban living at the door. I found that the movement isn't for everyone. But if you have a free spirited nature, then this could be a great way to get active and connect with others. As for the rating... Think of it as three hippie hugs out of five! Worth a visit.
